I've been able to track down some census information for John Gregory and have concluded that his middle initial was DEFINITELY W and not H.
If you look at the census forms that I uploaded you will see that the 1870 Iowa census lists both He and Mathilda and the children they had at that time. (Also note that it states that some of the children were born in Michigan.)
The 1880 Census only shows John and Henry living in Cass County. The census was obviously taken after Mathilda passed away and the younger children were adopted by other relatives. What's odd here is that William isn't listed as living with John and Henry.
Finally in what may be our only lead in learning who John W. Gregory's father was, I've found one entry in the 1830 census of Rutland County Vermont that has one male child under the age of 5. At this time John W. would have been three years old and we know that he was born around the town of Brandon, Vermont, just ten miles away from Orwell where this entry was credited to. The name I am now researching is Ithamar Gregory so if any of you genealogy fans with some time on your hands can research him that would be great.
I'm posting the image scanned from the 1830 census that shows Ithamar. Unfortunately at the time they didn't list the other names in the household so we'll have to dig deeper to find out if he is our missing link.
